From Twilight Into Sunshine
LGBTQ+ History in Maryland
Saturday, June 20
2:00pm - 4:00pm
Towson Branch
Towson RoomPublic librarian and local historian Ben Egerman discusses Maryland's queer history hidden in plain sight within the pages of local newspapers from the past century.
Before language existed to identify people whose gender expression and/or sexuality is non-conforming, 19th and early 20th century local newspapers offered tantalizing clues that all was not straight and narrow. A few decades later, the 1930s previewed the openness of recent times before giving way to a darker, more perilous era for LGBTQ+ people in the 1950s. This program reviews these twilight years and looks at the beginnings of the current movement toward LGBTQ+ visibility and rights.
Ben Egerman is a librarian, historian and zine author living in Baltimore. He travels to libraries throughout the state speaking about Maryland’s LGBTQ+ history. His work can be found at mdhistory.gay.
