The Great Baltimore Fire of 1904
From Devastation to Determination
Thursday, May 28
6:30pm - 7:30pm
Cockeysville Branch
Cockeysville Meeting RoomEven over a century later, the story of the fire that destroyed the heart of Baltimore and the city's remarkable recovery makes for one of the truly dramatic chapters in American history.
Though the smoke cleared long ago, questions about the Great Fire still smolder. Exactly how did it start? Why did it spread so rapidly? What key issues contributed to its inability to tame? What were the firefighting challenges? What heroic role did the Jones Falls River play? Did Baltimore City's fire department conduct itself heroically and why was the help of out-of-state engines useless? Why, at dawn of the city's subsequent rebirth, did Baltimore's young mayor take his own life? How did the fire propel the efforts for reconstruction and reforms? Finally, who were the heroes of the day, especially the four-legged one? Presented by historian Bev Rosen.
