We commemorate Holocaust Education Week with a presentation from Teach the Shoah speakers Dorothy Gold and Judy Gartner, who share the stories of family members who survived the Holocaust.
Judy Gartner was born in Baltimore to parents who left Nazi Germany in late 1937-1938. Judy’s childhood was marked by the shadow of all that her parents lost and their efforts to create a new family and community in the United States. She tells the story of her father, Carl Weiler, who grew up in a small town in Germany where his family owned a successful business for several generations. Carl fled Nazi Germany in 1937 at the age of 33, leaving behind his parents, Fritz and Ella Weiler, in Germany and his sister, Mathilde, who had emigrated to Hungary. None of them survived.
Dorothy Gold shares the story of her mother, Felina Gold, who was born in a small town in Poland. Felina was taken from her family at the age of 15. She survived two years in a Polish labor camp and three years in the Auschwitz concentration camp. Dorothy tells her mother's story in the first person.
Teach the Shoah uses professional storytelling techniques to create custodians of memory who share about lives and lessons from an increasingly remote past. Their goal is to widen the network of people who tell the stories of the Holocaust. They believe people of all ages and backgrounds can learn from the Holocaust and be ambassadors for a better world.
