Dr. Ruthie Bethea-Sholly discusses the enslaved women who fought to receive their benefits from the Civil War pension.
The Civil War pension, created in 1890, was originally intended for white men who fought on the side of the Union during the Civil War. However, the Pension Bill did not specify race, gender or job title of the recipient to qualify for the pension.
