Catonsville Meeting RoomExplore native butterflies and moths in a hands-on presentation by the Maryland Natural History Society. See live specimens and learn how to support and raise these insects from caterpillar to adult.
The Lepidoptery Club (Lep Club) from the Maryland Natural History Society presents Introduction to Native Butterflies and Moths and How to Raise Them. Learn the proper practices for caring for these fascinating insects through every stage of their life cycle—from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis or cocoon, and finally to adult butterfly or moth.
The Lep Club brings examples of live moths and butterflies at various life stages, along with host plants and mounted native species for display. This program offers a friendly introduction to butterflies and moths, covering their life cycles, common native species and the plants they rely on.
Learn how to create a welcoming garden, care for and raise caterpillars, and maintain a clean, healthy habitat. The Lep Club also shares simple ways to help butterflies and moths survive the winter so they can emerge strong in the spring.
Depending on availability, participants may have the opportunity to take home caterpillars to raise—please bring a covered container if you are interested.
