Pikesville Meeting RoomRabbi Larry Pinsker presents "New Gods for a New Land: A Curated Tour of How Immigrant Jews Invented the Modern Superhero Comic Book."
While there was an occasional bit of slang Yiddish inserted into the continuity of some comics, the origins of comic books and particularly those featuring superheroes were the product of early 20th century immigrant Jews and their teenage children. Pinsker discusses the origin of the graphic novel industry as well as how ancient ideals and spiritual values of the Jewish people emerged in the ethics and "mythology" of comic book characters.
Presented as part of the Yiddish Book Center's Public Libraries Program Between Two Worlds, in partnership with the American Library Association and funded by Lilly Endowment, Inc.
