Learn about the history of Black cemeteries and current efforts to restore and preserve these heirlooms of Black culture.
Historic Black cemeteries are sacred spaces, and repositories for memories of resistance, agency, self-determination and ancestral connection deeply entrenched in Black American culture. Yet these cemeteries are under threat of extinction due to development, racial terror and restrictive covenants and deficient resources. Local attorney Stephanie Franklin discusses how descendant communities and Friends Groups are fighting to protect and preserve Black cemeteries both in Maryland and at the national level.
